Black America

America. "Land of the free and home of the brave." Or is it? Even when the Emancipation Proclamation was passed in 1863 slavery was still going on. Although slavery abolished in the Union states of America until the late 1860's, we still see the differences from race to race. Now is this a state of actual freedom? With major cities over populated by minorities and a black president running the show, this is now known as BLACK AMERICA.

More Than Just A Jay-Z Lyric

"Inspired by Basquiat/my chariot of fire...."

Jean-Michel Basquiat is way beyond a Jay-Z lyric. Not the first time Jay-Z mentions Basquiat....and all the mentions are well deserved. You wonder what a hip-hop artist like Jay-Z has to do with a Neo-Expressionist painter? Click the jump to read more..
Often revered as one of the greatest African-American painters of all time started off as hip-hop as they come. Started as a graffiti writer, Basquiat found his medium. Writing SAMO, he caught fame early. Basquiat, soon fell victim to drugs and died in 1988.

An endless night

On a usual day, we work all day and work all night. On the other hand, while we were on vacation we relaxed all morning, worked in the afternoon, partied all night and enjoyed the sun rise every morning. This picture wraps up our mornings perfectly.

The very interesting phrase “A picture is worth a thousand words” is tossed around more than ever nowadays. The prospective of the viewer adds on words, thoughts, opinions and emotions. So is a picture really worth a thousand words? Maybe a million….?

Lost In The Digital Age

In this digital age, we all download(legally or illegally) the newest album from your favorite artists. This has caused the loss of appreciation for the album art. I feel as the album art is just as worthy as the music on the album itself. It can depict a story and evoke the perfect emotion that the artist tries to convey through song. click the jump for a few of my favorite album covers. This rhapsody commercial was beautifully done and shows the transition/growth of Jay-Z.

This cover to me is one of my favorite ever. Kanye West had Takashi Murakami design the cover. Not only is the artistic value great, the story is also portrayed perfectly.
An iconic album cover that is often recreated is Abbey Road by The Beatles. This photograph captures the members as they cross the road in perfect unison, even though the group eventually broke up.

A great story told by way of album art is Nas' Stillmatic, God's Son, and Street's Disciple. The story is that of the great flood as written in the bible, ended with he depicting himself as Jesus and all 12 disciples.

A queen for the real KING[s]

This weekend we had the pleasure of partying with Miami's very own Rick Ross, at his album release party for "Teflon Don". His fourth number one album, and man was it a blast! We had the opportunity to hang out with some of hip-hop’s best and the party went on till six in the morning. Although the night was fantastic, there was one thing that seem to be out of place……. the beautiful Dollicia Bryan. She’s on the cover of KING August 2010 and man is she stunting. We said hello and even conversed for a bit and before leaving she made sure to promote herself for LUMNO….

The Beginning of the Search-Interview with Demolition

As he gears up for the release of his first mixtape, Dale "Demolition" Reyes sits down with Lumno Media for his first official interview. Hailing from Washington Heights, a small community in Upper Manhattan, this Dominican bred rapper tries to share his creative visions with the world. Here is the first leak to his mixtape, Soul Searching, set for release sooner than you think.
Demolition- Soul Searching
interview after the jump...

Introduce yourself to the world.

What up what up world! Its ya boy Demolition. I'm happy to be here with Lumno Media!

What is your main purpose of putting out music?

Well my main purpose of putting out music is to live out a lifelong dream. To use a god-given talent i have been crafting for some time.

What was the first hip hop record you ever heard?

Well i honestly don't remember back that much since hip hop wasn't played in my house like that, but songs like Brenda's gotta baby by tupac come to mind

Top 5 rappers ever?

Hmm that's tough for me. Rakim,Nas,Pac... Prodigy was a monster back in the day... and a unknown to most but a true talent was Slaughter Rico!

Your major musical influences?

I was always a huge fan of illmatic, but my influence comes from where i first worked on writing, and that's poetry and writing. I'm more James Baldwin than anything

Moment that defines you as a artist?

I feel like that moment hasn't happened yet. Each year my style and the topics i touch change. I feel i haven't settled and reached my defining moment.. Yet!

What emotions do you try to bring to your music?

I try to invoke feelings people may not like to speak upon on a daily basis. I like to dig deep into life, and that reflects in my music. A constant search for truth.

One thing you bring to hip hop that you feel is unique?

What i feel that is unique about me in hiphop is my background and the honesty that comes with it. My upcoming Mixtape titled Soul Searching maybe a concept record, but if you
listen hard enough, you may see a little of me, and yourself, in the stories and characters portrayed.

The project first occupied an industrial area of Long Island City, Queens, directly across from the MoMA/P.S. 1 Museum. Through out its history The Phun Phactory attracted celebrated artists from around the world and served as a backdrop to countless movies, advertisements and events...

The Phun Phactory will re-launch in 2010, making its headquaters in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The new Phun Phactory project will convert an entire industrial zone on the Brooklyn water front into an outdoor mural art gallery- A neighborhood of art. The scale of this project will stimulate the New York City art scene. Artists will have an outlet to further their careers and art lovers will have a place to experience these works as if they were in the studio with the artist.

More than just wealth...

David de Rothschild born on 1978 in London was the youngest to receive the family’s banking fortune. A young wealthy handsome man, instead of being like the typical rich kid he put his time and money into something that would grow; his education. After leaving Collingham College in 1996 he attended Oxford Brookes receiving a 2:1 B.Sc in Political Science and Information Systems. Rothschild later studied at the college of Naturopathies Medicine. By the age of twenty, he started his own business, sold it and bout an organic farm in New Zealand.

In 2006, Rothschild was invited to join and expedition team across the polar cap. They spent over a hundred days crossing the Arctic from Russia to Canada. He became one in forty two people to accomplish this task and the youngest British to do it. Then at age 31 being the youngest Briton to reach both geographical poles. His new mission Plastiki Mission, named after Thor Heyerdehl’s 1947 Kon-Tiki project, is to bring to attention all the non-biodegradable plastic in the world’s oceans by sailing 8,000 miles across the pacific. Throughout the mission he will point out the Trash Vortex, an area of sea containing millions of tons of plastic. This area is believed to be six times the size of UK. On the mission he has his six person crew, including himself, and his global phone because how else would he get in touch with the rest of the world?

In reality this plastic that is forgotten as soon as it hits the water. The plastic is killing more than a hundred thousand mammals and sea turtles each year. The plastic bags, coffee foam cups and bottle caps are often found in dead dolphin and sea lions. About two hundred and fifty billion pounds of plastic pellets are produced each year. The major problem about plastic in the water is that this plastic contains toxic chemicals like DDT and PCBs which were banned ten years ago. These chemicals alter DNA and we have to remember marine life is a major part of our diet. So who are we really hurting? Ourselves?

The Roots- Dear God (new video)

Here at Lumno Media's blog, we try to stray away from posting up music videos or listing what rappers are doing with their lives. Instead we focus on up and coming artists, and showcasing talent. All at the same time paying respects to the greats. The Roots are coming out with their 11th album coming out. The Roots came out with a Single Dear God (2.0). Jason Goldwatch sitting behind the camera, directed a interesting video. The concept is ill, taking the Taxi approach Jason Goldwatch twisted it into a modern and very real situation of life. How I Got Over will be out this summer. Stay tuned for updates on the concert The Roots are having in Central Park. Lumno will definitely be there getting hands on coverage.

Boondocks- Medicine In Your Candy

The Boondocks is running its third and final season on Adult Swim. All three seasons have been filled with hilarious content laced with a dosage of truth.

Started by Aaron McGruder as a comic strip inside his alma maters' university, "The Boondocks" was a way to tell the truth about society while hiding it behind humor. As a popular saying goes "best way to give a child medicine is by hiding it in his candy". McGruder does this perfectly as he mixes in big issues in society (ex. like America's debt to China) into a hilarious premise (dodgeball game; US wins and debt is wiped away). The third season has been nothing short of amazing how the mix between funny and realness is perfected. The latest episode (see below) shows the absurdity African-Americans must deal with in "Hollywood". The episode parodies Tyler Perry and his famous character "Madea".

Sol Lewitt gave art new meaning and a complete new face on reinventing the foundation of expression. So simple and yet revolutionary.
Sol Lewitt (September 9, 1928 - April 8, 2007) was an American artist who was part of the Conceptual art and Minimalism movements. With his vision and perspective of art, he managed to scrape the true essence of a work and break it down to its foundation, its two and three dimensional form; plain old geometrical shapes. Of course when you think of great artist and painters first few names that are going to pop up is Picasso and Van Gogh, but little people know about great American painters. Lewitt has been the solo topic of hundreds of galleries and museums around American since 1965. When Lewitt died he left a giant footprint on contemporary art and a whole new approach to expressing yourself in a basic and most appealing manner.

Sol LeWitt, Tower, Figge Art Museum, Davenport, Iowa, USA, 1984.
